Human‐caused mortality triggers pack instability in gray wolves

چکیده

Transboundary movement of wildlife results in some the most complicated and unresolved management issues across globe. Depending on location managing agency, gray wolf (Canis lupus) US ranges from preservation to limited hunting population reduction. Most studies focus size growth rate inform management, but relatively few examine species biological processes at scales aside that population. This is especially important for group-living such as wolf, which breeding unit social group. We analyzed data packs living primarily within several National Park Service units (years data): Denali Preserve (33 years), Grand Teton (23 Voyageurs (12 Yellowstone (27 Yukon-Charley Rivers years). identified two differed – namely, pack persistence reproduction determined while human-caused mortality had negative effects both, a moderating effect impacts mortality.

Reconsidering the distribution of gray wolves

When attempting to understand where domestic plants and animals were domesticated, it is essential to consider the geographic distribution of the wild ancestor. Many domestic taxa now inhabit just about every continent thanks to their human-mediated dispersal which began soon after they were incorporated into the human niche. But just because sheep are now crucial to the economy of New Zealand ...

Like a Pack of Wolves: Community Structure of Web Trackers

Web trackers are services that monitor user behavior on the web. The information they collect is ostensibly used for customization and targeted advertising. Due to rising privacy concerns, users have started to install browser plugins that prevent tracking of their web usage. Such plugins tend to address tracking activity by means of crowdsourced filters. While these tools have been relatively ...

Worldwide patterns of genomic variation and admixture in gray wolves.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a widely distributed top predator and ancestor of the domestic dog. To address questions about wolf relationships to each other and dogs, we assembled and analyzed a data set of 34 canine genomes. The divergence between New and Old World wolves is the earliest branching event and is followed by the divergence of Old World wolves and dogs, confirming that the dog w...

Gray Wolves as Climate Change Buffers in Yellowstone

Understanding the mechanisms by which climate and predation patterns by top predators co-vary to affect community structure accrues added importance as humans exert growing influence over both climate and regional predator assemblages. In Yellowstone National Park, winter conditions and reintroduced gray wolves (Canis lupus) together determine the availability of winter carrion on which numerou...

Recolonizing gray wolves increase parasite infection risk in their prey

The recent recolonization of Central Europe by the European gray wolf (Canis lupus) provides an opportunity to study the dynamics of parasite transmission for cases when a definitive host returns after a phase of local extinction. We investigated whether a newly established wolf population increased the prevalence of those parasites in ungulate intermediate hosts representing wolf prey, whether...
